A Great Customer Experience Starts Long Before the Electrical Work Begins
When homeowners purchase a new home, they often discover that their future plans require more electrical capacity than the house was originally designed to handle. As more families add electric appliances, EV chargers, home offices, workshops, pools, and backup power systems, electrical service upgrades become an important investment in safety, reliability, and future growth.
Recently, Dynamo Electric had the opportunity to help a homeowner in Baltimore County navigate a complex electrical service upgrade that evolved significantly throughout the planning process. What began as a standard 200 amp service upgrade ultimately became a complete 400 amp service installation involving coordination with BGE, Baltimore County inspections, NEC compliance upgrades, service relocation requirements, and multiple stages of construction.
The project took approximately four months from planning to final completion, but the result was a safe, code-compliant electrical system designed to serve the homeowner for decades to come.
The Original Plan: Upgrade to 200 Amps
Like many homeowners moving into a newly purchased home, our customer wanted to modernize the electrical system and prepare for future improvements.
The original scope of work was straightforward: upgrade the home’s electrical service to 200 amps.
A 200 amp service is one of the most common upgrades homeowners request because it provides additional electrical capacity for modern living. It can support larger HVAC systems, kitchen appliances, home additions, and many other electrical improvements.
However, as the homeowner continued planning future projects, the electrical demand calculations began to change.
When Future Planning Changes Everything
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners can make is installing an electrical service that only meets today’s needs.
During the planning process, the homeowner decided to add several additional electrical appliances and future upgrades. After reviewing the anticipated electrical load, it became clear that a 200 amp service would not provide the long-term capacity they desired.
Rather than installing a system that could eventually become undersized, the homeowner made the smart decision to invest in a 400 amp service upgrade.
This decision required a complete redesign of the project.
At Dynamo Electric, we believe in taking initiative and helping customers understand the long-term implications of their decisions. Sometimes the best solution is not the easiest solution, it is the solution that provides the greatest value for years to come.
Discovering Existing Code Compliance Issues
As our team evaluated the existing electrical service, we discovered another challenge.
The original service installation did not comply with current National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements and utility standards.
Many older homes were installed under previous code cycles. While these systems may have been acceptable when originally installed, major upgrades often trigger the need to bring portions of the electrical service up to current standards.
In this case, the service location and utility requirements created several additional considerations.
The electrical service would need to be relocated to the side of the home and raised above the roofline to comply with current utility requirements.
These changes affected nearly every aspect of the project and required extensive coordination between multiple parties.
Coordinating with BGE and Baltimore County
One of the most overlooked aspects of a service upgrade is the amount of planning that occurs before the first tool is ever removed from the truck.
Electrical service upgrades involve multiple stakeholders, including:
- The homeowner
- The electrical contractor
- BGE
- Baltimore County permitting officials
- County electrical inspectors
Each organization has its own requirements and specifications.
Before construction could begin, Dynamo Electric coordinated directly with BGE and Baltimore County to ensure the proposed installation met all applicable standards.
Our team submitted the necessary applications, reviewed utility specifications, obtained permits, and verified installation requirements before scheduling the work.
This planning phase helps eliminate delays and reduces the likelihood of costly surprises during construction.
Building a New Service That Meets Modern Standards
Because of the new service location and increased electrical capacity, several critical components had to be incorporated into the design.
Service Mast Installation
BGE required a properly installed service mast to support the new overhead electrical service.
A service mast is designed to provide the structural support necessary for utility conductors while maintaining proper clearances from the home and surrounding structures.
Proper mast installation is critical for both safety and utility approval.
Service Disconnect Requirements
Current NEC requirements also required the installation of service disconnects.
Modern service disconnects provide homeowners and emergency responders with a safe method of disconnecting power when necessary.
These devices enhance safety while helping the installation comply with current electrical standards.
400 Amp Electrical Service
The final design provided the homeowner with a robust 400 amp electrical service capable of supporting future expansion, additional appliances, and evolving electrical needs.
Rather than having to revisit the electrical infrastructure years later, the homeowner now has a system designed for long-term flexibility.
Managing a Multi-Stage Construction Process
Unlike a simple panel replacement, this project required multiple phases of work.
Each phase depended upon approvals and coordination between contractors, inspectors, and the utility company.
The process included:
- Project planning and load calculations
- Utility coordination with BGE
- Baltimore County permit approval
- Installation of new service equipment
- Service mast installation
- Installation of service disconnects
- County inspections
- Utility connection scheduling
- Final testing and verification
Because each step had to occur in a specific sequence, the project timeline extended over approximately four months.
Throughout the process, communication remained a top priority.
Our team kept the homeowner informed of progress, scheduling requirements, utility coordination efforts, and any changes that occurred along the way.
The Dynamo Difference

What the Customer Had to Say
At the end of the project, the homeowner shared the following review:
“As always, Dynamo Electric did a great job on the work at our house this week. All work was completed timely and within budget and any price increases were explained before the work began. Sam and Tony were excellent, as were Derek and Mike. Dynamo’s owner, Kenny, is always responsive and takes a personal interest in all of Dynamo’s work. I highly recommend Dynamo for any electrical projects.”
Reviews like this remind us why we do what we do.
Electrical work is about more than wires, panels, and permits. It is about building trust, solving problems, and helping homeowners safely achieve their goals.
