Installing a QuietCool Whole House Fan

At Dynamo Electric, one of the services that we love to provide is the installation of whole house fans. Here are some basics about whole house fans, the installation process, and what we recommend.

How does a whole house fan work?

A whole house fan cools your house using the outside air. Instead of running your air conditioning at night, you simply open your windows, turn on the whole house fan, and it brings that cooler, outside air into your house. The fan brings the air in from the outside, blows it up into the attic, and vents through the attic to the outside.

When is the best time to use a whole house fan?

You want to use it when the temperatures are warmer outside during the day and cooler at night. Here in Maryland, this is especially helpful because we get a lot of seasonal temperature changes throughout the year. Spring and fall are the best times to use the whole house fan.

What are the benefits of a whole house fan?

A whole house fan helps keep your electric bills down. Plus, it brings in the fresh air from outside instead of just recycling the same inside air, like air conditioning does.

What kind of house would benefit?

We can install whole house fans in any size house that has an attic, where we feed the electricity to the unit. The attic is necessary for the proper airflow to cool down the house.

How is a whole house fan different from an attic fan?

An attic fan just moves out the existing air in the attic. But the whole house fan actually pulls in the outside air and brings it through your house up into the attic, and then out from there.

How is a whole house fan different from a ceiling fan?

A ceiling fan only creates a breeze in one room at a time, and it just moves the same air around. But the whole house fan creates a breeze throughout the house, and it brings fresh outside air in.

What brand do you recommend?

Based on personal experience and customer satisfaction, we recommend QuietCool. The QuietCool fans come in a range of sizes, but overall, they are smaller and quieter than the traditional whole house fans. They are also easier to install than the traditional whole house fans that you would typically find at a home improvement store.

We really like installing the QuietCool fans for customers because they get a high-quality product, and they’re happy with the results. Customers can save on their HVAC bills and cool their house down more efficiently than just running the AC.

How is the QuietCool whole house fan installed?

The QuietCool fan and motor are designed to hang between the existing rafters in the attic, far above the ceiling. This is different from the traditional models, where the fan gets mounted to the ceiling joist and shakes the house when it runs. Also, the QuietCool vent fits into the existing ceiling, making the installation faster and cheaper.

How do I control the QuietCool after it’s installed?

On the floor below the attic, we install a wall switch. The wall switch controls the fan, and it has a timer that you can set for different amounts of time.

Another nice feature of the QuietCool fans is the optional remote. The remote allows you to turn it on, control the speed, and set a timer so it turns off automatically. So, if you want to control the fan from other rooms in your house or from your smartphone, you can.
